Engine 26 and Medic 26 responded to a medical response with Sheriff’s Deputies at 45 Ann Court to assist with a woman suffering from a behavioral disorder. On arrival, deputies were having a confrontation with the woman who was tazed several times in attempts to get her under control. She was later transported by Medic 26 to Colleton Medical Center. Family members then notified firefighters that the woman had attempted to burn the wood frame structure. A debris pile was actively burning in the front yard, which was found to contain wood siding from the home. The woman had poured gasoline inside the structure and set a fire in a large wood burning stove in the center of the home. Battalion 1 and several other personnel responded to the scene with air monitoring equipment before anyone entered the residence. The home was searched and monitored, but levels were found to be within safe levels. The home was ventilated and burning items were removed from the residence. The fire in the wood burning stove as well the debris pile in the front yard were extinguished. Units were on the scene for 1-1/2 hours. The Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the case.
