Colleton County Fire-Rescue

5/23/2010

Stations 3, 7, 23 and 18 responded to a 20 ft camper/RV fire near 86 Tiffany Lane west of Smoaks Sunday afternoon 23-May at 1552. The incident was originally called in as a grass fire that had gotten away from the land owner. The call was cancelled a short time later advising they had gotten it under control. A firefighter-paramedic who was in the area rode by the location approximately 15 minutes later to discover the camper well involved. He radioed the report to dispatch and a structural assignment was dispatched. Engine 7 and Tender 7 arrived a short time later deploying one 1-3/4 handline. The fire was quickly brought under control and other units were cancelled. Apparently the landowners were in the process of burning down an old singlewide mobile home when the fire extended to the camper. The camper was completely destroyed. A 23 year old male suffered smoke inhalation and possibly airway burns in the process of trying to extinguish the fire. He was suffering from severe respiratory distress. Firefighter-Paramedics treated him at the scene and requested a medical helicopter due to their remote location. Lifenet 3 responded to a field near the scene. The patient was flown to Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Poor weather conditions prevented the helicopter from flying to Charleston.

Engine 7, Engine 18, Tender 3, Tender 7, Tender 23, Medic 26 and Battalion 1 responded. Captain John Graham served as Incident Commander. Captain Doug Mixson Jr. in Tender 23 handled the Landing Zone.
