Colleton County Fire-Rescue

6/18/2010

Stations 1, 5 and 19 responded to a high speed, single vehicle MVC in the 15600 block of Augusta Hwy just east of Round O Road near Canadys, Friday evening 18-June at 2304. A west bound 1997 Ford Explorer left the roadway while traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle entered the ditch, but the driver apparently over-corrected while bringing the small SUV back on the roadway. The driver lost control as the vehicle flipped over striking a large pine tree. The SUV then rolled back over onto its wheels. It suffered substantial damage. The adult male occupant was not wearing a seatbelt and was killed on impact. Firefighter-Paramedics arrived a short time later and pronounced the man at the scene, then contacted the Coroner’s Office. Following the Coroner’s  investigation, Firefighters used Holmatro Rescue Tools to remove the severely damaged driver’s door and extricate the victim. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating to determine if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. Traffic on Augusta Highway was rerouted for about one and half hours.

Engine 5, Rescue 1, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Richard Sheffield served as Incident Commander.
