Colleton County Fire-Rescue

7/6/2010

Stations 1 and 26 responded to a double shooting incident at 1122 Sniders Hwy at the Kangaroo Gas Station Tuesday evening 6-July at 2212. Rescue 1, Medic 1 and Battalion 1 initially responded to a man down with a gunshot wound to the chest. The 19 year old man was found lying on the side of the road east of the Kangaroo Store. He was found in critical condition. As crews treated his injuries, a medical helicopter was contacted to respond to the scene. The shooting was related to an attempted robbery at the store and a second subject was at large in the area. Law Enforcement personnel from Walterboro Public Safety, the Highway Patrol and Sheriff’s Office searched the area including a wooded lot near the store. Several armed officers with assault rifles stood by as Firefighter-Paramedics prepared the man for transport. His condition rapidly deteriorated, so the decision was made to transport him to Colleton Medical Center. Fire-Rescue personnel diverted the Omniflight helicopter to the hospital and radioed to patients condition to the Emergency Department. He was quickly transported by Medic 1 to the ED.

On arrival at the emergency department, Dr. Outz and the ED staff were prepped and ready for his arrival. The ED staff moved quickly to perform emergency surgical procedures in the ED to save his life. The helicopter arrived a short time later and the patient was prepared for the flight to the Trauma Center at MUSC.  He was flown in critical condition to Charleston.

Back at the scene, a Medic 26 had been called to assist a clerk at the store who was injured in the altercation. While there, Law Enforcement Officers located the second suspect in the wooded area next to the store. The man suffered gunshot wounds. Firefighter-Paramedics ran to his aid, but the man had no signs of life. He was pronounced dead and the Coroner’s Office was notified. Coroner Richard Harvey responded to the scene with several of his deputies. The clerk was later transported to Colleton Medical Center for evaluation. SLED was called to assist with the investigation.

Rescue 1, Medic 1, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 11 and Car 116 responded. Captain Scott Feather served as Incident Commander.
