“A” Shift – MVC with entrapment

Incident # 10-06420 – An adult female suffered multiple traumatic injuries in a high speed crash in the 4000 block of Charleston Highway Friday afternoon 26-November at 13:04. The west bound passenger car lost control in a curve, spun around backwards striking a large oak tree on the east bound side of the road. The Crown Victoria suffered massive rear end damage which pushed the rear seats forward and broke the backs on the front seats. A male patient was able to exit the vehicle on his own, however the female patient was trapped in the wreckage and complaining of a great deal of pain. Firefighter-Paramedics stabilized the patient in the vehicle, used Holmatro Rescue Tools to remove the passenger side rear door and “B” post to extricate the patient. She was removed with full spinal precautions. A medical helicopter was not available due to poor weather conditions. Medic 19 administered pain medications and transported the patient by ground 57 miles to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The male patient refused transport to the ED. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Engine 19, Medic 19, Medic 9, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
