01/12/2011 – “C” Shift – MVC with Air Evacuation

Incident # 11-00235 - A 22 year old Ruffin woman has succumbed to her injuries following a high speed single car MVC on Cypress Pond Road near Ulmer Lake Road, Wednesday morning 12-January at 11:20. The southbound Chevrolet Malibu left the roadway after exiting a curve and apparently over-corrected while coming back on the road, causing the vehicle to slide sideways. The car struck the bridge abutment causing massive damage and breaking the vehicle into three pieces. The driver was ejected from the car and found under the bridge. She was unconscious, in critical condition with multiple traumatic injuries. A medical helicopter was called to the scene. Firefighter-Paramedics treated her in the canal before immobilizing her, then moving her to Medic 19. She was transported to a field near the scene to meet with the helicopter. Firefighter-Paramedics performed RSI on the patient to secure her airway and established multiple IV lines. Omniflight-Charleston landed  in the field and flew the patient to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston.

She died shortly after arrival at MUSC. Many children’s items were found in the mangled car, including a child safety seat. Firefighters searched the surrounding area and used thermal imaging equipment to help with the search. No other patients were found. Firefighters and a Trooper located some family members who verified the child was safe and was not in the car at the time of the accident.

Engine 1, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Dan Barb served as Incident Commander.
