01/29/2011 – “B” Shift – Structure Fire

Incident # 11-00566 - Battalion 1 spotted a column of thick black smoke off of Green Pond Highway Saturday afternoon, 29-January. He had just cleared up from the 100 acre woods fire in the Catholic Hill Community when he noticed the smoke. Upon investigation, he discovered a yard on fire in the 100 block of Windy Hill Lane, which had spread to a 10x10 storage building and a singlewide mobile home. The storage building was well involved with the mobile home just beginning to burn. Fortunately multiple units were also clearing from the woods fire nearby and were able to respond quickly to the scene. Engine 22 and Tender 22 arrived within minutes, deploying one 1-3/4 handline for the structure fire and a booster line for the grass fire. Crews performed a quick search of the smoke filled residence and did not locate anyone. While engaged in extinguishing the fire, a neighbor ran up indicating a small child may be in the residence. Firefighters researched the building two more times and still did not locate anyone. It was later found that the child was with a relative at another location. Firefighters removed the exterior siding from the building and pulled down the ceiling in the kitchen area. Fire had spread into the exterior wall and the void space between the ceiling and the roof. The remainder of the residence was saved, with little smoke damage. The storage building was a complete loss. No one was injured in the incident.  The fire spread from an unattended trash pile fire in the front yard.
