03/13/2011 – “C” Shift – Fatal MVC Incident # 11-01445 - The SC Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal single vehicle motorcycle accident that occurred in the 4800 block of Peirce Road north of Cottageville Sunday afternoon 13-March. The accident was reported at 4:53 PM. Firefighter-Paramedics on Engine 9 and Medic 9 arrived to find the adult male driver of the motorcycle lying unconscious on the shoulder of the road. The man’s wife, who had been riding on a separate motorcycle behind the man, was performing CPR. Crewmembers found the man to have no vital signs. CPR was continued and life saving procedures initiated, including intubation, IVs, medications and immobilization of his suspected injuries. He was rapidly loaded into Medic 9, then transported to Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. The ED staff continued resuscitative efforts, but the man did not respond to the care. It appeared the man failed to negotiate a curve, driving into the shallow ditch until he struck a steel mail box support which was fashioned from a farm implement. He was not wearing a helmet. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating to determine if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. |
