03/23/2011 – “A” Shift – Woods Fire Endangering Structures

Incident # 11-01683 – Engine 18 responded to a woods fire in the 10600 block of Bells Highway Wednesday afternoon 23-March at 13:49. They arrived to find a large rapidly moving woods/grass/field fire endangering multiple structures, vehicles, boats and farm equipment. A structural response was requested and dispatched to assist Engine 18. Six stations total responded along with the Forestry Commission. Firefighters were able to keep the flames from reaching any buildings and saved the personal property. A man on a farm tractor also assisted by plowing a fire break around several vehicles and boats. Units were on the scene for nearly three hours. The fire burned approximately 5 acres and originated from a hay fire that had been extinguished two days prior. 20 mile per hour winds evidently rekindled the hay fire and contributed to the rapid spread.

Engine 7, Engine 15, Engine 18, Engine 26, Engine 31, Tender 4, Tender 7, Tender 18, Brush 31, Medic 19 and Battalion 1 responded. Engineer-EMT Robert Sherry served as Incident Commander.
