03/24/2011 – “B” Shift – Woods/Vehicle Fires

Incident # 11-01709 – A rapidly spreading grass/woods fire in the Islandton Community was one of several woods fires that kept firefighters busy Thursday afternoon, 24-March. Units were dispatched at 13:52 to the 4000 block of Forks Road by a person reporting a large fire in the area. Engine 4 arrived to find an approximately 1-1/2 acre rapidly moving grass fire that was threatening one residence. Several pieces of farm equipment, two vehicles, several piles of debris and a small wooden structure on a trailer were also well involved. Seven other vehicles were also threatened. Additional fire units were requested as Engine 4 deployed two handlines and a booster line to combat the multiple fires. Brush 31 responded through a field to attack and stop the head of the fire, preventing it from reaching the home. Engine 31 also deployed handlines to help extinguish the vehicles. Firefighters worked for 30 minutes to contain the fires and were on the scene for 1-1/2 hours performing overhaul. The cause of the blaze in under investigation.

Engine 4, Engine 10, Engine 18, Engine 31, Tender 18, Tender 23, Tender 32, Brush 31, Medic 18 and Car 110 responded. Captain Richard Sheffield served as Incident Commander.
