03/31/2011 – “B” Shift Structure Fire

Incident # 11-01830 – Early notification resulted in saving a large mobile home Thursday morning, 31-March. Firefighters were sent to 201 Mallard Lane at 00:12 reporting a possible fire in the kitchen of the residence. The 125 x 38 doublewide mobile home had multiple additions. The homeowner had a grease fire on the stove approximately 30 minutes earlier, damaging the stove and the kitchen cabinets. They were able to extinguish the fire with a portable fire extinguisher limiting the damage to the kitchen. The family cleaned the kitchen and moved the damaged stove to the exterior of the structure onto a wooden deck. While there, a teenage boy noticed smoke coming from the eaves of the home. They evacuated the house and notified 9-1-1. Engine 26 arrived minutes later to find light smoke emitting from the eaves. One 1-3/4 handline was deployed to the structure. Upon visual inspection and with the use of a thermal imager it was determined the fire was burning in the void space between the roof and ceiling above the kitchen. Firefighters used hand tools to remove some sheet rock above the stove to find fire burning over the kitchen and living room.

Salvage covers were used to cover the furniture and a 100 gallon fish tank in the living room, before crews began pulling the ceiling on both sides of the kitchen wall. The extension was found to be minimal and was quickly extinguished with the single handline. Additional ceiling was pulled to verify there was no further extension. Damage was kept to a minimum. No one was injured during the incident.

Engine 19, Engine 26, Tender 1, Tender 19, Tender 26, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 118 responded. Captain Scott Feather served as Incident Commander.
