05/20/2011 – Fatal MVC – “B” Shift Incident # 11-02802 – A two vehicle MVC has left one man dead and a woman with minor injuries. Fire-Rescue responded to the fatal collision in the 26300 block of Augusta Highway (SC Hwy 61) west of Pearce Road Friday evening 20-May at 21:19. Apparently a west bound 2001 KIA Sportage was traveling in the east bound lane when it struck an east bound Harley Davidson motorcycle head-on. The impact caused heavy damage to both vehicles. Firefighter-Paramedics found the 31 year old motorcyclist lying on the ground near the edge of the roadway. He did not have any signs of life. The man was not wearing a helmet and appeared to have died of multiple traumatic injuries. The 52 year old female driver of the KIA was transported by Medic 9 to Colleton Medical Center with minor injuries. Traffic on the highway was closed for several hours while the Highway Patrol and the Coroner’s Office conducted their investigations. The Coroner’s Office transported the male patient to MUSC for further examination. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating to determine if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. |
