09/23/2011 – Truck MVC with injuries – “A” Shift

Incident # 11-05158 – Two northbound tractor trailers collided on I-95 at 05:51 Friday morning 23-September. The accident occurred when a northbound truck with an empty container ran into the back of a slower moving truck that was hauling axles. The second truck was traveling just below the speed limit, so the impact caused massive damage to the rig. The front of the truck drove under the trailer of the first vehicle, with the rear of the trailer resting at the windshield of the second semi. A debris field of oil, engine and truck parts littered the Interstate for several hundred feet. Both trucks became locked together, with the forward rig in the breakdown lane and the second vehicle blocking the outside lane. The driver of the second truck suffered multiple none life threatening traumatic injuries, including an open fracture. The driver of the first truck complained of several traumatic injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics who arrived first, requested a second Medic Unit. Engine 1 blocked the outside lane. Several Deputies who were working interdiction in the area heard the crash and arrived on the scene within seconds.

The second driver was transported directly to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston by Medic 1. No medical Helicopters could fly due poor weather. The driver of the first truck was transported and later admitted to Colleton Medical Center. Traffic on I-95 was down to one lane for several hours. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 1, Medic 1, Medic 26, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
