Incident # 11-05478 - A head-on collision involving two vehicles injured six people and sent three to area hospitals. The accident occurred in the 6800 block of Pierce Road south of Pineview Lane, Sunday afternoon 09-October at 16:16. The two pickup trucks, a small Mazda and full size Dodge, hit head-on in a curve. One interior passenger was ejected from the Mazda, while one adult male who was riding in the bed of the truck was also thrown from the vehicle. Two other females and a male were also injured. The driver of the Dodge received non-life threatening injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics on Medic 9 and Engine 11 arrived to find the Mazda in the ditch with heavy damage. The Dodge was several hundred feet down the road. A 22 year old female was unconscious in the ditch. Due to the number of patients, Medic 1 and Medic 19 were assigned to the incident and a medical helicopter was also requested. The unconscious female was treated at the scene and transported to a field off of Augusta Hwy to meet with Lifenet 4.

Engine 19 set up a Landing Zone across from Meeting House Lane. She was flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The other two female patients were transported to Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro by Medic 19. All three men denied ambulance transportation to the hospital and were treated at the scene. Pierce Road was closed at the accident site for about an hour and reopened to one lane for another hour. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash to determine if alcohol was a contributing factor.

Engine 11, Engine 19, Medic 1, Medic 9, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Captain Ethan Shider served as Incident Commander.
