11/18/2011 – Fatal MVC with entrapment – “A” Shift

Incident # 11-06132 – A single car MVC on Interstate 95 has left one woman dead and a man injured. The accident occurred near the 52 mile marker southbound at 09:54 Friday morning 18-November. The southbound Jeep Grand Cherokee left the roadway, entering the ditch on the right hand side of the highway. As the driver was recovering and bringing the vehicle back to the roadway, the small SUV began to flip over at a high rate of speed. The vehicle flipped at least two times, coming to rest on its wheels. Both occupants were wearing seatbelts, but the female driver suffered massive head injuries and was trapped in the wreckage. Firefighter-Paramedics on Medic 1 determined the woman had no signs of life and notified the Coroner’s Office. Other crewmembers treated the front seat passenger who was transported by Medic 1 to Colleton Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The vehicle came to rest in the median side lane blocking the highway. Traffic on the busy Interstate was down to one lane for approximately 1-1/2 hours, causing traffic to back up for six miles. Once the Coroner’s Office completed their investigation, Firefighters used Holmatro Rescue Tools to remove the driver’s door and a hydraulic ram to displace the dash to free her legs. She was transported by the Coroner’s Office. The SC Hwy Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 1, Rescue 1, Medic 1, Medic 26, Car 12, Car 110, Car 111, Car 118 responded. Captain Scott Feather served as Incident Commander.
