02/24/2012 – Tornado Damage – “C” Shift Incident # 12-01069 – A tornado touched down in the Islandton Community destroying one structure, damaging several homes and knocking out power to the area for several hours. The first report of the incident was received at 17:29 Friday evening 24-February, reporting a tornado on the ground in the 500 block of Jamison Court. Several other callers reported damage in a northeasterly direction crossing Sniders Highway. One vacant home was completely destroyed, while several out buildings, bird coupes, trailers and mobile homes received damage. Two mobile homes had portions of their roofs removed by the winds. Several pigeons and chickens from the coupes lost their lives, but fortunately no people in the mobile homes were injured. One mobile home was located within 50 feet of the destroyed house, it received only minor damage. Many trees were overturned as well as several large trees near Sniders Highway which took down some of the main power supply lines for the community. Power crews were on the scene quickly to secure the power and move downed lines. |

They worked through the night to restore power. Firefighters supplied tarps to residents who needed them and assisted with lighting for some neighborhood crews could see to install plastic over holes in several roofs. Channel 2’s News Crew also used the scene lighting on their satellite truck to illuminate the dark neighborhood and assist the people in seeing how to make emergency repairs. Metal from tin roofs littered the path of the tornado for over a mile away from Jamison Court. Engine 10, Car 12, Car 116 and Car 118 responded. Captain Matt Williams served as Incident Commander.
