06/23/2012 – MVC with Air Evacuation – “C” Shift

Incident # 12-03361 – A high speed single car MVC sent two people to the hospital Saturday evening 23-June. The incident was reported at 20:48, when a State Trooper witnessed the vehicle leave the roadway and strike a wooden power pole in the 20000 block of Lowcountry Highway (US Highway 21) near Merrill Road. The car severed the pole into several pieces before coming to rest near the wood line. It suffered heavy damage. An adult male and adult female in the car were injured. Rescuers could not initially reach the car due to downed power lines. Power to the Bells and Smoaks communities was out for several hours due to the accident. Once SCE&G personnel arrived, they rendered the lines safe, so Fire-Rescue personnel could access the car. Both patients were treated at the scene. The female driver suffered suspected internal injuries and a head injury. A second Medic Unit was assigned to the incident and one medical helicopter was requested. Both patients were loaded into Medic 18, then transported to the field in front of Bells Elementary School to meet with the Lifenet 4 helicopter.

Medic 26 meet Medic 18 at the school and transferred the male patient for the transport to Colleton Medical Center. The female patient was flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. Traffic on Lowcountry Highway was rerouted for several hours until the power company could replace the pole and re-hang the lines.

Engine 18, Medic 18, Rescue 18, Medic 26, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic Pat Powell served as Incident Commander.
