17/Sept/2012 – MVC with Air Evacuation – “B” Shift

Incident # 12-05114 – A New Jersey man is in critical condition following a collision with a tractor trailer on I-95 Monday evening 17-September at 21:40. The accident occurred near the 54 mile marker southbound, when a Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling at a high rate of speed drove under the rear of a moving northbound tractor trailer. The small SUV received heavy front end damage and became wedged under the trailer. The SUV driver suffered multiple traumatic injuries including an open head injury. The truck driver, not realizing the car was under the truck, pulled off at Exit 53 one mile south and was surprised to discover the car attached to the truck. No driver was found in the car. Several callers to 9-1-1 reported seeing a person crawling on the ground near the bottom of the Exit ramp. Fire-Rescue personnel and Walterboro Public Safety Officers searched the area, finding the man semi-conscious in the yard of a nearby motel, located about one block away from the scene.

Firefighter-Paramedics treated him, then rapidly transported the man to meet with LifeNet 4 at the Colleton Medical Center helipad. The patient was transferred to the flight crew and flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. His condition deteriorated enroute. Law Enforcement continue to investigate the incident. It was discovered that the man was reported missing from New Jersey earlier in the day. The SC Highway Patrol is handling the accident.

Medic 1, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. SC Highway Patrol, Walterboro Public Safety and Colleton County Sheriff’s Office also responded.  Battalion Chief Ben Heape served as Incident Commander.
