19/Sept/2012 – MVC w/entrapment & Air Evacuation Incident # 12-05155 – A Summerville man was extricated from his car following a high speed MVC on Augusta Highway Wednesday evening, 19-September. The 41 year old man’s small Chevrolet Tracker was struck in the driver’s side by a full sized Ford Pickup truck causing heavy damage to the small SUV. The man received multiple traumatic injuries, was trapped in the wreckage and witnesses advised he was unconscious following the impact. A 14 year old female passenger in the pickup truck received non-life threatening injuries. Medic 9 requested a second ambulance and a medical helicopter for the driver of the SUV. Firefighters spent 20 minutes removing the doors and roof of the Tracker to extricate the driver. He was treated at the scene, then transported to a nearby field to meet with the LIfeNet 4 medical helicopter. The flight crew flew him to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. Medic 19 treated the 14 year old female, then transported her to Colleton Medical Center. Traffic on Augusta Highway and Peirce Road was closed for nearly an hour. The SC highway Patrol is investigating the crash. |

Engine 9, Engine 11, Medic 9, Medic 19, Rescue 1 and Battalion 1 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander. Captain Ethan Shieder was LZ Coordinator.
