20/October/2012 – Barn Fire – “B” Shift

Incident # 12-05757 - Two young colts perished in a mid-afternoon fire at DC Farms, located at 628 Southern Charm Road near the Hudson Mill Community, Saturday 20-October. The fire was reported at 15:45, when a neighbor who was returning home noticed smoke through the woods and went to investigate. They found the barn fully involved and called 9-1-1. Engine 18 arrived eight minutes later to find the approximately 50 by 30 foot wooden barn mostly collapsed. A truck load of hay, piled seven feet high, was stored in the building and was still burning heavily. Firefighters used three hand lines to knock down the remaining flames, then spent nearly 30 minutes removing the remains of the metal roof to reach the smoldering embers and burned farm implements that had been stored in the barn.  Crews used fire rakes to pull apart the hay bales to extinguish the smoldering fire within the bales. Two colts that were born in the spring died in their stalls. No one was at home when the fire started. A preliminary investigation lead firefighters to believe the fire was electrical in origin. The barn was completely destroyed. Fire units were on the scene for two hours.

Engine 18, Engine 31, Tender 7, Tender 18, Tender 26, Medic 18, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic (Acting Battalion Chief) Steven Scurry served as Incident Commander.
