28/October/2012 – Fatal MVC – “A” Shift

Incident # 12-05907 - A 25 year old Lodge man died in a high speed, fiery crash in the 3000 block of Carters Ford Road, just north of Mare Bay Drive Sunday evening 28-October. At 20:15, Colleton 9-1-1 Operators initially received a call from On-Star reporting a collision with air bag deployment in that general area, according to GPS coordinates. Shortly thereafter 9-1-1 Operators received multiple calls reporting the accident advising the driver of the car was trapped and the car was on fire. Two Colleton Firefighters, who live less than a ¼ mile from the scene, heard the crash and immediately responded to the scene. They and a bystander attempted to pull the unconscious man through the rear window. His legs were trapped in the wreckage. The three continued attempts to free the man, but they were driven away from the car by the growing flames. They advised the man did not have a pulse. Fire-Rescue units arrived several minutes later to find the car fully involved. Firefighter-Paramedics deployed one 1-3/4 handline to extinguish the fire. Crews had the fire knocked down within ten minutes, but the man was deceased.

After the Coroner’s Office finished their investigation, Fire-Rescue crews used hydraulic rescue tools to remove the two driver’s side doors and the “B” post to free the man’s body. He was transported to MUSC by the Coroner’s Office. Apparently the south bound car lost control after clearing a curve, crossed over into the north bound ditch before striking several trees. The car suffered heavy damage in the collision, with several feet of intrusion on the passenger’s side and a collapse of the roof. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 18, Medic 18, Rescue 18, Car 105 and Car 12 responded. Deputy Chief David Greene served as Incident Commander.
