07/November/2012 – Hero Award

MUSC RN Ryan Curry travelled to Cottageville Elementary School to present the Hero of the Month Award to nine year old Kenneth Pusha. Pusha, a Jacksonboro resident, who was burned on 16-September, was treated and transported to the MUSC Pediatric Trauma Center by Medic 6. He was injured when gasoline exploded, after it was thrown on a burning yard debris fire. He was presented with a Hero shirt, a medal and a gift certificate for the bravery and courage he displayed during his treatment at MUSC. The presentation was made in front of his class, with his mother and twin brother present. Pusha was also reunited with Firefighter-Paramedic Scott Mrowca, one of two personnel who cared for him at the scene and during the transport to MUSC. Firefighter-Paramedic Brain Rowe was off-duty and was unable to attend. Station 9’s crew and Fire Marshal Richard Sheffield were also in attendance. Sheffield oversees Fire-Rescue’s Fire Prevention Education Program and is the Chairman of the South Carolina Burned Children’s Fund Advisory Board. MUSC Children’s Hospital Pediatric Burn Service participates in “Hero of the Month”, a program of the Kids Wish Network.

Each month, Pediatric Burn Team members nominate a child or teen between the ages of 3 and 18 who have demonstrated courage and spirit that are an inspiration to all. The Hero of the Month, through the Kids Wish Network, is awarded with special gifts, paying tribute to the child’s ability to overcome adversity and continue on the path of recovery.
