13/November/2012 - Tractor Trailer MVC - "A" Shift

Incident # 12-06210 - The northbound lanes of I-95 were closed for over four hours this morning following an accident at Exit 62. At 05:08 this morning (13-November) a northbound tractor trailer left the roadway striking the guard rail before the McLeod Road overpass. The entire rig overturned onto its roof, before striking the bridge abutment. One of the fuel tanks was dislodged from the truck and was struck by a passing tractor trailer. This caused diesel fuel to be spilled over the bridge and parts of the Interstate north of the accident. The fuel and a large amount of debris caused the northbound lanes of the interstate to be shutdown. Sheriff's Deputies rerouted traffic down the exit ramp and back up to the entrance ramp to bypass the accident and keep the traffic flowing.  Traffic was slowed down because of only one lane, but emergency personnel on McLeod Road were able to kept it moving across the secondary road without stopping. SCDOT responded to the scene about 1-1/2 hours later and set up a formal detour. SCDOT used a sand truck to cover the large amount of diesel fuel with sand.

It covered approximately 2/10 of a mile. The driver escaped the crash with no injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics offered to examine him at the scene, but he denied the need for medical attention. The SC Transport Police and Highway Patrol are investigating the accident.

Engine 26, Tender 5, Tender 26, Medic 26, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded.
Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
