16/November/2012 – Structure Fire – “B” Shift

Incident # 12-06256 – Three people were injured when a gas heater flashed after a resident attempted to light the device in a residence located at 8947 Augusta Highway in the Springtown Community.  The incident was reported at 09:53 Friday morning 16-November advising the home was on fire. Engine 17 arrived within minutes to find light smoke showing from the single story brick veneer dwelling. One of the occupants was caught in the flash fire, which set his clothing on fire. He received facial and other burns. The occupants extinguished the man’s clothing, several pieces of furniture and a closet with a dry powder fire extinguisher. They transported the man to Colleton Medical Center by private car before the arrival of Fire-Rescue units. Firefighters deployed one 1-3/4 handline and pulled the ceiling in the closet. The fire had extended into the attic, but was extinguished. The home suffered light smoke damage and several pieces of furniture was also damaged. The other two occupants, one who suffered minor burns to his hand and the second with minor traumatic injuries, both denied ambulance transportation to the hospital.

They were treated at the scene by Firefighter-Paramedics. The man with the burns was airlifted from Colleton Medical Center by LifeNet 4 and transported to the Still Burn Center in Augusta Georgia.

Engine 17, Engine 26, Tender 5, Tender 7, Tender 17, Tender 26, Medic 26, Battalion 1 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Scott Feather served as Incident Commander.
