02/December/2012 – MVC w/Entrapment & Air Evacuation – “B” Shift

An 83 year old New Jersey man suffered multiple traumatic injuries after crashing his car on I-95 Sunday morning 2-December at 00:49. The Toyota Prius left the roadway near the 45 mile marker northbound, entered the median and stuck several trees. The man was trapped in the wreckage, receiving several fractures and a head injury. Firefighter-Paramedics used a chainsaw to remove vegetation and downed trees to access the driver’s side of the car, then used Holmatro Rescue Tools to extricate the man. He was treated for his multiple injuries at the scene by Medic 1 and flown by LifeNet 7 medical helicopter to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. Northbound traffic was stopped for about fifteen minutes while the helicopter was on the Interstate. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 1, Medic 1, Rescue 1 and Battalion 1 responded. Firefighter-EMT Brandon Broach served as Incident Commander.
