Incident # 13-00738 – A 25 year old Round O man was critically injured after being ejected from a high speed motor vehicle collision. The accident was reported at 03:30, Saturday morning 09-February after a resident in Lafayette Park was awaken by the nearby crash. The 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse was northbound on Jefferies Highway when it left the roadway at a high rate of speed near the intersection of Lafayette Lane. The car struck a medium size pine tree, breaking it off at the base before spinning around backwards as it began to flip over. The car struck several other trees, receiving heavy damage as it came to rest on its wheels. The driver was ejected from the car. Medic 19 and Engine 19 arrived several minutes later. Unable to locate any occupants inside the vehicle, they began searching the wooded area with flashlights.  The man was found semi-conscious, lying on the ground near the front of the car in the brush. He suffered multiple traumatic injuries including head injuries.

Firefighter-Paramedics quickly immobilized the man, then moved him to Medic 19. Additional Firefighter-Paramedics arrived a few minutes later. A medical helicopter stationed at Colleton Medical Center was placed on standby. Firefighter and two Patrol Officers from Walterboro Public Safety searched the woods for additional patients, but did not locate other victims. Crewmembers began stabilizing the man, but had to RSI the patient at the scene to stabilize his airway. He was rapidly transported to CMC and transferred to LifeNet 4. The Flight Crew flew the patient to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston where he remained in critical condition. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
