23/February/2013 – Fatal MVC – “B” Shift

Incident # 13-01000 – A 79 year old Bennetts Point residence died in a single car accident in the 500 block of Baldwin Lane Saturday morning 23-Febraury. 9-1-1 was notified of the accident at 08:58, but authorities speculate it occurred earlier in the morning. Investigators are working to determine exactly what happened, but it appears the northbound vehicle left the dirt roadway during heavy rains, drove down an embankment at a wooden bridge and crashed into a creek. The water in the creek was at near high tide when the accident occurred, submerging most of the cab. Firefighters from Station 21 at Bennetts Point arrived within minutes of the alarm. The man was without signs of life. Fire-Rescue and DNR Divers responded to the scene, but were not needed. A man from the community brought a backhoe to the accident site to secure the small pickup truck and trailer until it could be removed from the creek. The Coroner’s Office transported the man. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 21, Medic 1, Medic 6, Rescue 1, Marine 27, Squad 27, Brush 2, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 107 responded. Firefighter Marvin Crawley served as Incident Commander.
