23/May/2013 – MVC with Air Evacuation – “A” Shift

Incident # 13-02752 – A 47 year old Colleton County man is in critical condition following a dirt bike accident. The accident occurred in the 25000 block of Augusta Highway at 18:11 Thursday afternoon 23-May. Witnesses advised the motorcycle struck a tree. The man was unresponsive following the crash. Firefighter-Paramedics found the man in a similar state on the side of the highway. Several bystanders were administering first aid. He suffered multiple traumatic injuries including a head injury. He was not wearing a helmet. Crews immobilized the man and requested a medical helicopter to respond. The man’s condition deteriorated rapidly at the scene. Firefighter-Paramedics had to perform a chest decompression, which involved inserting a needle into the chest cavity to relieve pressure to allow the man to breath. Multiple IV lines were established to restore his blood pressure. The LifeNet 7 helicopter from Charleston arrived quickly and the crews RSIed the patient to enable them to insert a tube in his lungs so they breath for him. His condition greatly improved prior to the helicopter lifting off. He was flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 11, Medic 9, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-EMT Hallie Young served as Incident Commander. Captain Ethan Shieder served as Landing Zone Coordinator.
