08/June/2013 – Traumatic Injury with Air Evac – “B” Shift Incident # 13-03078 – A 42 year old man was left in critical condition following an altercation at 304 Dagger Lane south of the Ashton Community Saturday evening 08-June at 21:17. Law Enforcement and Fire-Rescue were called to the location for a man being unconscious. It was reported that he had been choked until he became unconscious. Bystanders assisted the man until Firefighter-Paramedics arrived. Medic 18’s crew found the man unconscious with severe difficulty breathing. Crewmembers immobilized the man on a spine board, before performing RSI to secure his airway. A medical helicopter was called and a landing zone set up at the Bells Elementary School, however the helicopter had a problem with its landing light and could not perform a scene landing. Medic 18 then transported the patient to the helipad at Colleton Medical Center to meet with LifeNet 4, who is stationed at the hospital. He was transferred to the Flight crew without incident, then flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident. |

Engine 23, Medic 18 and Battalion 1 responded to the scene. Engine 18 established a Landing Zone at Bells Elementary School. Captain Doug Mixson Jr. served as Incident Commander.
