22/June/2013 – High Speed MVC w/ two air evacs – “A” Shift

Incident # 13-03382 – A high speed single car MVC resulted in two patients being flown to a Trauma Center Saturday evening 22-June. The incident was reported at 18:54 in the 200 block of Confederate Highway north of the Ashton Community, after the small car lost control in a curve, struck the embankment at a small creek and became airborne. The car then struck several trees causing heavy damage to the automobile. Medic 18 encountered two patients with life threatening injuries. They requested a second ambulance and a medical helicopter. Both patients were immobilized and treated at the scene. A 31 year old male who was unconscious was placed in Medic 18, then transported approximately ½ mile to the intersection of Bells Highway (SC Hwy 64) and Confederate Highway (SC Hwy 641). Engine 18 and Engine 23 blocked off the intersection to allow the LifeNet 4 helicopter to land there. The patient was transferred to the flight crew without incident and flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. Care of the second patient, a 28 year old female, was handed over to Medic 26 .

Her condition deteriorated while on the scene, so a second medical helicopter was requested for that patient. Due to the extended ETA of the second helicopter, Medic 26 transported the patient to the helipad at Colleton Medical Center to meet with LifeNet 7 from Charleston. The patient was also flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 18, Engine 23, Squad 23, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Captain Doug Mixson Jr. served as Incident Commander. Firefighter-EMT Jeff Laney served as LZ coordinator.
