30/June/2013 – Submerged Vehicle – “C” Shift

Incident # 13-03543 – A small southbound SUV lost control in the 4400 block of Green Pond Highway near Catawba Hill Court and crashed into a deep drainage ditch submerging most of the vehicle. A 51 year old female and 9 year old female were inside the car. Torrential rains had just passed through the area causing flooding in several areas of the county. A flash flood warning was in effect. Running water had filled the ditches on Green Pond Highway and was flowing over the road in the 4400 block when the SUV hit the water. The woman and child were unable to exit the vehicle. A Security Officer from Colleton Medical Center stopped and assisted the pair from the car. They had difficulty escaping the ditch due to the fast currents and water flowing through a submerged culvert pipe near the car. However, all three were able to escape wet, but unharmed. Medic 1’s crew evaluated the two females and provide blankets. A family member arrived at the scene to transport them home. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 1, Medic 1, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 111 responded.
