29/August/2013 – Locomotive Fire – “C” shift

Incident # 13-04726 – Firefighters were initially dispatched to a vehicle fire on Green Pond Highway at the railroad tracks Thursday morning 29-August at 10:49. While enroute, units were advised the fire involved a CSX Locomotive near the intersection. Tender 6 and Medic 6 arrived to find smoke coming from under the second Engine of the freight train. Flames were visible around the area of the wheels on the “B” side of the train. CSX Rail personnel had already used portable fire extinguishers to attempt to control the fire. Firefighters deployed one 1-3/4 handline and were able to quickly extinguish the remaining fire. The surrounding metal was extremely hot, so crews continued to flow water in an attempt to cool the metal. A booster line was also deployed to the “C” side of the train. Both lines were used to reach hot metal under the train. The problem appeared to have originated with the brakes or a wheel bearing. Mechanics from CSX responded to the scene. North and Southbound rail traffic was halted for about an hour.

Engine 2, Engine 6, Tender 6, Medic 6, Car 105 and Car 107 responded. Chief McRoy served as Incident Commander.
