21/October/2013 – Fatal MVC w/ejection – “A” Shift

Incident # 13-05736 - A 54 year old man died from injuries sustained in a high speed single car MVC on Can City Road Monday morning 21-October. The Toyota Avalon was northbound on Can City Road when it failed to negotiate a curve near the intersection with Rolling Brook Lane. The car entered the ditch, struck a culvert pipe and became airborne. The car completely jumped Rolling Brook Lane, then impacted a pine tree approximately eight feet off the ground. The impact broke the tree into several pieces and caused the car to split in half. The driver was ejected. A portion of the tree and a great amount of debris was in the roadway. A motorist found the accident and reported it to 9-1-1 at 04:43, however evidence at the scene indicated the collision occurred several hours prior to it being found. Can City Road is a lightly traveled, rural secondary road. Fire-Rescue units arrived several minutes after the dispatch. Firefighter-Paramedics found the driver north of the site and determined the man had no signs of life. Crewmembers set up lighting to illuminate the scene, then used flash lights and a Thermal Imaging Camera to search the surrounding woods for other patients. None were found. The Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. The Coroner’s Office transported the patient to Colleton Medical Center. Can City Road was closed for three hours while Troopers performed their investigation.

Engine 26, Medic 26, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic K.C. Campbell served as Incident Commander.
