16/December/2013 – MVC w/entrapment & Air Evac x 2

Incident # 13-06821 – A two vehicle collision left two people critically injured Monday evening 16-December at 18:42. The accident occurred when a loaded log truck attempted to cross ACE Basin Parkway (US Highway 17) at Wood Road. A southbound Jeep Cherokee tried to avoid the large truck, but collided at a high rate of speed, striking the rear tandem wheels on the trailer. The Cherokee suffered heavy damage, trapping both occupants. Both patients in the Cherokee suffered multiple traumatic injuries. The driver of the truck was not injured. The accident blocked three lanes of ACE Basin Parkway. Firefighter-Paramedics from Station 6, one block from the scene, arrived within two minutes. They requested an additional ambulance and two medical helicopters. Firefighter-Paramedics were able to force open the driver’s door with hand tools and freed the driver. He was placed in Medic 6, where crew members treated his injuries. Crew members began treating the female passenger while other Firefighter-Paramedics used Holmatro Rescue Tools to extricate her from the car. Once freed, she was placed in Medic 1 and transported to nearby field to meet with LifeNet 4. She was transferred to the Flight Crew without difficulty, then flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. LifeNet 7 landed on ACE Basin Parkway, north of the accident.

The male patient was quickly transferred to the Flight Crew and flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC. ACE Basin Parkway was down to one lane of traffic for about twenty minutes and completely blocked for 25 minutes. The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.

Engine 6, Medic 1, Medic 6, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 12, Car 107, Car 111 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
