06/January/2014 – High Speed MVC – “C” Shift

Incident # 14-00048 - A four vehicle, high speed accident completely blocked I-95 northbound at the 50 mile marker Monday morning 06-December at 02:22. Witnesses stated a northbound tractor trailer side swiped another tractor trailer. The first truck lost control and over-turned blocking the northbound lanes. One passenger car and a small SUV traveling behind the trucks attempted to avoid a collision. The car went into the median and became stuck, however the SUV struck the underside, rear of the over-turned trailer, receiving heavy damage. Northbound traffic stopped and began backing up. Northbound emergency units had some difficulty reaching the scene due to the backed up traffic and vehicles parked in the breakdown lane. Other emergency units responded three miles southbound in the northbound lanes to reach the scene. Firefighter-Paramedics treated the four passengers of the SUV. Two adults and two children were transported to Colleton Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The truck drivers were not injured. The over-turned truck was hauling food products.

Sheriff’s Deputies set up a detour at Exit 42 (Lowcountry Hwy/US Hwy 21), diverting northbound traffic to Hendersonville Hwy./Hwy 17-A. Two large wreckers were used to pull the over-turned truck to the side of the Interstate to open the travel lanes. The Towing Company had personnel on the scene throughout Monday unloading the trailer, so the truck could be righted. The SC Highway Patrol and the Transport Police are investigating the accident.

Engine 13, Medic 1, Medic 13, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic (Acting Battalion Chief) Chris Jones served as Incident Commander.
