18/January/2014 – HazMat Incident – “A” Shift

Incident # 14-00336 – Firefighters were called to the scene of a 55 gallon drum dumped on the side of the road in the 2800 block of Beach Road at the entrance to the Sandy Springs Subdivision Saturday morning 18-January. At 09:09, a caller reported to 9-1-1 that the blue plastic drum was laying on its side near a creek. The caller reported the drum possibly contained chemicals. HazMat 19 was sent with crews from Station 1 to investigate the drum. Engine 1, Tender 1 and Medic 1 arrived within minutes and blocked off Beach Rd and Sandy Springs Circle. Traffic was diverted to Ulmer Lake Road. Once HazMat 19 arrived  crews attempted to identify the material, but the container as not marked. They found the drum contained approximately 10 to 20 gallons of an unknown liquid. After several telephone calls to DHEC, Firefighters secured the drum, placed it in an overpack container and had the County Solid Waste Department take it to a safe location until DHEC could come after the holiday. Units were on the scene for over four hours.

Engine 1, Tender 1, HazMat 19, Medic 1, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 111 responded. Battalion Chief Dan Barb served as Incident Commander.
