02/February/2014 – Structure Fire – “B” Shift

Incident # 14-00605 – Quick thinking by the resident saved an Ashton residence early Sunday 02-February. At 01:47 Fire Units were sent to 2611 Willow Swamp Road for a reported structure fire. The occupant advised he smelled smoke in the house and found the wall over the fireplace was on fire. They threw water on the wall to extinguish the fire over the mantle. While another person called 9-1-1, he began dismantling the burned mantle and removed the burning contents of the fireplace, placing them outside. Firefighters arrived quickly from Station 23 located a mile from the home. They found smoke in the residence and smoke coming from the eaves around the chimney. Firefighters removed the sheetrock from around the fireplace and found the wood behind the sheetrock was burned. There was no extension into the attic. Crews were on the scene for approximately 45 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Engine 15, Engine 18, Engine 23, Tender 15,  Tender 18, Tender 23, Medic 18, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Captain Doug Mixson Jr, served as Incident Commander.
