Colleton County Fire-Rescue
02/26/2014
26/February/2014 – Structure Fire – “A” Shift Incident # 14-01311 – A fire destroyed a vacant home at
230 Monticello Lane east of Cottageville, Wednesday evening 26-February at
19:33. Fire-Rescue units were sent to the location when a passerby noticed
flames in the woods. Units arrived to find a fully involved single family
block home located in a wooded area several hundred feet off of the road.
Firefighters stretched 150 feet of 3 inch hose from Engine 9 into the woods,
then gated it off to two 200 feet 1-3/4 hand lines. All that remained was
the block walls. The roof, interior walls and most of the floor had already
burned away. Firefighters pushed some of the exterior block walls, out and
away from the building to make them safe for those operating around the
structure. Crews spent approximately 40 minutes extinguishing the remaining
fire and cooling the large amount of coals left from the burning debris.
Water supply was conducted with Tenders. A neighbor advised the structure had been vacant since the 1970s. There was no power connected to the house, however there was evidence that someone had been staying inside the building. The Sheriff’s Office and SLED were notified and are assisting in the investigating. |
