18/March/2014 – Fatal MVC – “C” Shift

Incident # 14-01713 – An adult male died Tuesday afternoon 18-March after being struck by a SUV in the 7700 block of Green Pond Highway (SC Hwy. 303) just north of Ritter Crossroads. 9-1-1 received several reports of the accident at 13:30. Firefighter-Paramedics arrived minutes later to find a Chevrolet Tahoe with heavy damage on the northbound shoulder of the road. The deceased man was located south of the accident in the ditch. He was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple traumatic injuries. Crewmembers from Medic 6 treated the woman driving the SUV. She did not complain of any injuries, but was very distraught. She was transported to Colleton Medical Center for further evaluation. A short time later, Medic 6 responded back to the scene to transport a witness who was suffering from an unrelated medical problem. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. MAIT also responded. Sheriff’s Deputies rerouted traffic on a two mile stretch of Green Pond Highway between Ritter Road and  Rocky Road for over four hours as investigators worked the scene.

Engine 6, Medic 6, Battalion 1 and Car 107 responded. Battalion Chief Ben Heape served as Incident Commander.
