09/May/2014 – Traumatic Injury with Air Evac – “A” Shift

Incident # 14-02934 – A 60 year old man received a severe traumatic injury to his leg after he lost control of a table saw. The saw cut a path from his thigh to lower leg causing profound bleeding. Firefighter-Paramedics on Medic 19 called for additional assistance as they worked to control the bleeding and establish IV lines to replace his blood loss. A medical helicopter was placed on standby. LifeNet 4 was at Colleton Medical Center, so Medic 19 rapidly transported the patient to meet the flight crew on the helipad at CMC. The patient was transferred to the helicopter, then flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC.

Engine 19, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Ben Heape served as Incident Commander.
