12/May/2014 – MVC with Entrapment & Air Evac – “A” Shift 

Incident # 14-02911 – A single car MVC on I-95 near the 61 mile marker, completely blocked the northbound lanes for over an hour, causing traffic to back up over six miles. The northbound Nissan Titan Pickup Truck lost control and flipped over multiple times, leaving a trail of debris before landing upright blocking the travel lanes. The 37 year old male driver, was wearing a seatbelt, but received critical injuries in the crash. An off-duty NC Paramedic stopped to render aid and relayed information to responding units through the 9-1-1 dispatcher. Firefighter-Paramedics from Station # 26 arrived to find the heavily damaged pickup truck in the roadway. The driver had been unconscious, due to a head injury. They treated the man’s injuries and requested a medical helicopter to respond to the scene. Crewmembers used Holmatro Rescue Tools to remove the driver’s door so they could safely extricate him from the vehicle. The man was immobilized, then moved to Medic 26, where RSI was necessary to secure his airway. LifeNet 4 landed on the Interstate north of the accident site. The patient was moved to the helicopter without incident, then flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Sheriff’s Deputies routed traffic to Bells Highway for several hours until the accident could be cleared.

Engine 26, Medic 26, Rescue 1, Car 12, Car 105 and Car 111 responded. Deputy Chief David Greene served as Incident Commander.
