20/June/2014 – MVC with entrapment & Air Evac – “A” Shift

Incident # 14-03641 – Three people were injured in a head-on collision in the 8300 block of ACE Basin Parkway (US Highway 17) Friday afternoon 20-June. The accident occurred just north of Wood Road in front of the Ashepoo Grocery Store. At 17:24 a southbound Ford F-250 pickup truck collided head-on with a northbound Mercedes passenger car. Both vehicles received heavy damage, resulting in the Mercedes overturning and trapping the female the driver. Bystanders rolled the Mercedes back on its wheels before emergency personnel arrived. Both occupants of the Mercedes were wearing seatbelts. Firefighter-Paramedics on Engine 6 arrived two minutes later to find both northbound lanes and one southbound lane blocked. They quickly accessed the scene, confirmed one person was trapped, then requested one additional ambulance and a medical helicopter. Crewmembers used Holmatro Rescue Tools to remove the driver’s door on the Mercedes so they could extricate the 33 year old female driver. LifeNet 4 landed on ACE Basin Parkway south of the accident. Law Enforcement had already closed the highway and rerouted traffic to Fire Station Road around the accident. The woman was transported to the helicopter and flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston.

Medic 1 transported the driver of the pickup truck, who suffered multiple non-life threatening injuries, to Colleton Medical Center. After the helicopter departed, Medic 6 also transported a 35 year old male from the Mercedes with non-life threatening injuries to Colleton Medical Center. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Units were on the scene for 1-1/2 hours.

Engine 6, Medic 1, Medic 6, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 107 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic Justin Warko served as Incident Commander.
