17/October/2014 – MVC with entrapment & Air Evac – “C” Shift

Incident # 14-06110 – Two adult males received suspected life threatening injuries in a single car crash in the 3000 block of Charleston Hwy (SC Hwy 64), just east of Brittlebank Road, Friday evening 17-October. At 20:45, 9-1-1 received several reports of the accident advising a person was trapped and the car was on fire. Engine 24 arrived minutes later to find the Cadillac off the south side of the highway in a ditch. The vehicle had been traveling west when it crossed the highway and entered the woods on the eastbound side of the highway, striking a tree. The car suffered heavy damage, trapping the passenger in the car, but there was no fire. The driver, who received a head injury, was climbing out of the car when Firefighters arrived. Personnel began treating both patients, while other crewmembers used Holmatro Rescue tools to remove the passenger side door. The passenger was unconscious, suffering multiple traumatic injuries. Two medical helicopters were requested. Both patients were treated and immobilized at the scene, then transported to the helipad at Colleton Medical Center. Medic 19 transferred their patient to LifeNet 4, who flew the patient to the Trauma Center at MUSC. LifeNet 7 landed at the helipad just after Medic 13 arrived. Their patient was transferred to the Flight Crew, then was also flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC. Charleston Highway in the area of the accident was blocked for about 45 minutes.  The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Engine 1, Engine 24, Rescue 1, Medic 1, Medic 13, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-EMT-I James Varnadoe served as Incident Commander.
