01/November/2014 – Structure Fire – “C” Shift

Incident # 14-06388 – Colleton County Firefighters saved a triple wide mobile home located at 624 Roadside Drive south of Hendersonville Saturday afternoon 01-Nov. At 15:51, a caller to 9-1-1 reported seeing smoke coming from the residence. Engine 13 arrived minutes later to find heavy smoke conditions. Crews deployed two handlines and Firefighters entered the home. The fire was found in the area of the kitchen, but had also extended into the attic space and was spreading over the remainder of the home. Crews knocked down most of the fire in the kitchen before the Incident Commander pulled them out of the house. The roof had begun to sag prompting concern for the safety of personnel operating inside the structure. Shortly after Firefighters exited the building the roof over the kitchen collapsed. Firefighters continued fighting the fire from the exterior until enough flames were extinguished to safely re-enter the home. Most of the triple wide mobile home was saved and most personal items were salvaged. The remainder of the house suffered smoke damage. No injuries were reported during the incident.

The fire originated on the stove. The homeowner had been preparing a meal for a neighbor when the power went out. They gathered the food and took it to the neighbor, but evidently forgot to turn off the stove. When the power returned the occupant was away from the house. The stove heated up the grease in a pot which flared up and spread to the cabinets. Fire units were on the scene for nearly three hours. Water supply was handled with Tenders.

Engine 8, Engine 13, Tender 1, Tender 6, Tender 8, Tender 27, Medic 6, Medic 13 and Battalion 1 responded. Battalion Chief Ben Heape served as Incident Commander.
