19/November/2014 - Structure Fire – “B” Shift Incident # 14-06752 – A Cottageville home was heavily
damaged in an early morning fire Wednesday morning 19-November. At 02:59,
9-1-1 was notified of the fire in the roof of a single family dwelling
located at 18 Locomotive Lane north of Cottageville. Engine 9 arrived to
find heavy smoke conditions from the doublewide mobile home with flames
visible from the rear of the structure. The home owner was on the roof in
below freezing temperatures attempting to douse the flames with a garden
hose. Firefighters made entry through the front door with two 1-3/4 hand
lines. There was little smoke inside the residence. The fire originated near
the chimney and burned a portion of the roof away. The fire spread through
the void space between the living area and the roof. Firefighters had to
pull the ceiling down in a quarter of the structure to reach and extinguish
the flames. All of the fire damage was in this area, but the about half the
home suffered water damage. Firefighters spread tarps over many furnishings
in an attempt to protect them from water. Many personal items were saved,
but the family of three adults and three children were displaced. The
American Red Cross is assisting the family. Engine 9, Engine 19, Tender 2, Tender 5, Tender 19,
Tender 27, Medic 9, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion
Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander. |
