03/December/2014 – Fatal Train - Pedestrian Accident –
“A” Shift Incident # 14-07064 – An adult male was killed
Wednesday morning 03-December after he was struck by a CSX freight train at
approximately 04:02 on Public Landing Lane. Witnesses advised the man got
out of a pickup truck at the marked crossing and was attempting to touch the
passing train when he was struck. The crossing arms and warning lights were
functioning properly. Fire-Rescue units arrived minutes after being
dispatched, but the man was already deceased from multiple traumatic
injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics also treated a female witness and
transported her to Colleton Medical Center for evaluation. She had no
injuries, but was distraught. CSX personnel on the train witnessed the
accident and the train did stop. The crossing was blocked for several hours
while Law Enforcement conducted their investigation. The Colleton County
Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office are investigating. This was the second
accident at a rail crossing in Colleton County in the last four days. Engine 13, Medic 13, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded.
