19 & 20/March/2015 – Moped Accidents with a Fatality –
“C”&”A” Shifts One man died and another was critically injured in
separated motor vehicle collisions involving mopeds Thursday and Friday. Incident # 15-01518 – A 62 year old Green Pond man died
Friday from injuries he sustained Thursday afternoon 19-March. At 14:19,
Fire-Rescue was notified of a Moped that was struck by a car on ACE Basin
Parkway (US Hwy. 17) at Wood Road. Station 6 is located one block from the
scene and arrived one minute later. Firefighter-Paramedics found the man
unconscious in the highway with multiple traumatic injuries. The moped
suffered heavy damage. The man was treated at the scene and a medical
helicopter was requested, however none could fly due to poor weather
conditions. Fire-Rescue then transported the man by ambulance directly to
the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. Additional Firefighter-Paramedics
assisted during the transport and advanced airway procedures were performed
enroute to maintain the patient’s breathing. The SC Highway Patrol is
investigating the crash. |

Firefighter-EMT Matt Smart served as Incident Commander. Incident # 15-01538 – A second accident involving a
moped occurred Friday evening 20-March in the 100 block of Sidneys Road just
north of Cottageville Highway. At 19:50, Fire-Rescue was sent to the
location behind the Forks Gas Station for a moped that struck a car head-on.
Firefighter-Paramedics arrived to find a 47 year old male lying in the
roadway. The man suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was in critical
condition. He was quickly treated at the scene, then rapidly transported to
Colleton Medical Center to be stabilized. A medical helicopter was not
available, so Fire-Rescue transported the man from CMC to the Trauma Center
at MUSC Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Engine 19, Medic 19 and Car 12 responded.
