23/May/2015 – High Speed MVC – “B” Shift

Incident # 15-02716 – A 70 year old man narrowly missed being struck by a vehicle Saturday morning 23-May at Toby’s Bluff Bait and Tackle Shop in Islandton. At 11:04, the man was performing yard work around the exterior of the building located at 17600 Sniders Hwy, when a Mercury Monarch attempted to turn on to Dopson Road from Sniders Hwy (SC Hwy 63) at a high rate of speed. The man heard the tires squealing as the car slide sideways. The Mercury struck a pickup truck parked in front of the business causing it to be projected forward approximately 70 feet to the other side of the store. The man was able to jump to safety from the path of the pickup truck. The car received heavy damage and also struck a fence. A female rear passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries. Two male subjects quickly exited the vehicle and ran off into the nearby woods. A State Trooper rode up on the accident within a minute of its occurrence, but did not make contact with the men fleeing the scene. Engine 15 arrived minutes later and began treating the woman. She was immobilized, then transported by Medic 18 to Colleton Medical Center. The Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist the Highway Patrol searching for the subjects who fled and left the injured woman at the scene.

Engine 15, Medic 18, Car 12 and Battalion 1 responded. Captain Matt Williams served as Incident Commander.
