10/August/2015 – MVC w/entrapment & Air Evac – “C” Shift

Incident # 15-04595 – A 24 year old Brunson woman was critically injured in a high speed MVC on Sniders Hwy (SC Hwy 63) east of Jonas Road Monday afternoon 10-August. At 15:35, 9-1-1 Dispatchers in both Colleton and Hampton Counties began receiving reports of the crash. Several callers gave different locations reporting the incident along a two mile stretch of SC Hwy 63 in both Counties. Emergency units from both Colleton and Hampton went to the scene. Colleton Engine 15 arrived to find a Kia SUV with massive damage against a tree. The east bound car lost control in a curve, forcing a west bound pickup truck into the ditch and striking an east bound tractor trailer before leaving the roadway. The car rolled onto its side before hitting the tree, which crushed the roof on the driver’s side to the floor. Firefighters found the critically injured driver heavily entrapped in the wreckage. She was wearing a seatbelt. Throughout the extrication, Firefighter-Paramedics treated the woman inside the car which included IVs, analgesics and airway control. Several sets of Holmatro Rescue Tools were used to remove the driver’s side doors and the entire roof. It took crews 30 minutes to free the woman. She was extricated with full spinal precautions and transported from the scene in Colleton Medic 18. A landing zone was established at the baseball field on Moselle Road a few miles from the accident location.

Medic 18 met with LifeNet 4 at the ball field, where advanced airway treatment was required to sustain the patient’s breathing. She was flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The other drivers were not injured. The incident was a successful team effort by both agencies. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Engine 10, Engine 15, Medic 18, Rescue 18, Battalion 1, Car 12, Car 105 and Car 117 responded. Hampton County Fire-Rescue and Hampton County EMS also responded. Deputy Chief David Greene served as Incident Commander.
