17/February/2016 – MVC with ejection – “B” Shift

Incident # 16-00933 – An adult male was critically injured in a single car MVC in the 12000 block of Cottageville Highway (US Hwy 17-A) Wednesday evening 17-February. The accident was reported at 22:40 with the caller advising the patient had been ejected from the vehicle and was under the car. It appeared the SUV had been traveling south bound on Cottageville Highway when it left the roadway on the right shoulder and hit a driveway. The vehicle flipped over, then landed at the next driveway. Medic 9 arrived minutes later to find the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer upright across the ditch with heavy damage. The vehicle rolled at least once. The Cottageville man was found semi-conscious with multiple traumatic injuries in the ditch under the SUV, but he was not trapped. Firefighter-Paramedics quickly began treating the man, immobilized him and then moved him to Medic 9. His airway was compromised by a stick impaled through his neck. Crews worked to secure his airway and rapidly transported him to Colleton Medical Center to be stabilized. Shortly after arrival at CMC, he was transferred by medical helicopter (LifeNet 4) to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 9, Medic 9, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-EMT Andy Sahlman served as Incident Commander.
